The Lion King South Africa is being produced by Lebo M and Pieter Toerien Productions, who together have formed a Joint Venture to ensure the successful staging of this world class show. South African performers have been in every single production of the Lion King from the first show in New York to the nine other productions which have played to packed houses around the world.
Grammy-winner Lebo M is one of the original singer/songwriters of the award-winning musical score The Lion King will be staged in the only theatre capable of hosting this production – the custom-built Teatro at Montecasino, being constructed by Tsogo Sun at a cost of more than R100 million. The South African production will feature a wholly South African cast
This is the most ambitious theatrical project in South Africa and Africa.
HAIR came directly from Greenwich Village, a couple of blocks away from the real hippies changing the world down in Washing ton Square, and blazed every aspect of this counterculture across the stage in vivid afro, tie-dye, beaded, long-haired, psychedelic colour! “We wanted to create something new, something different, something that translated to the stage the wonderful excitement we felt in the streetsâ€, commented Rado.
And HAIR didn’t stop there – in 1970 and 1975 it challenged the American Constitution to uphold the First Amendment right of freedom of speech, and also became the iconic anti-war musical, unfortunately as relevant today as it was in the Flower Power ‘60s at the height of the Vietnam conflict.
