The popular tournament, now in its fourth consecutive year, is the brainchild of former Springbok stars Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck. Medac/Rockets, the country’s leading manufacturer and distributor of sports injury bracing and performance gear will be the official rehab partner for the event.

This year is set to be bigger and better than ever with the number of teams being increased from 56 to 72 and there will now be four divisions – a heavy and light Beer League, The Vets League and the more competitive Premier League.

As always, there will be appearances many from local and international rugby legends such as Breyton Paulse, Leon Lloyd, John Allen and Malcolm O’Kelly. The tournament will include plenty of entertainment off the field with live performances from top acts such as the UK band, The Lightyears and the popular Cape Town based Me and Mr Brown. There will also be beer and food tents, children’s play areas and lots of fun competitions and giveaways including a kicking contest that will see one lucky winner walk away with a brand-new Golf GTI worth R365 000.

As the official rehab partners, Medac/Rockets will have physiotherapists which will be on hand throughout the tournament to assist players with recovery and managing injuries including the use of a cryotherapeutic ice recovery pool and providing post-game massages at the Medac/Rockets Recovery Zone.

“The 10’s tournament is a great event to be involved in. Our recovery tent provides all the players with a world class service of which we are extremely proud,” says Craig Homan, Medac CEO.

Tickets are available now through Computicket. (Kids under 12 are free)

Cravings Delicatessen, a popular health food deli in the cosmopolitan neighborhood of Sea Point, is launching a healthy and convenient picnic service for the Cape Town Summer season.

The Cravings picnic package is ideal for a day out at the beach, romantic lunches, family gatherings, corporate events and more. Customers can call in to pre-order from the Cravings menu, which consists of a wide selection of freshly made fruit and veggie juices, tasty smoothies, ice-teas, iced-coffees, fruits, salads, sandwiches and wraps. The food gets packed into a Cravings cooler bag that comes with ice packs and can be collected at the store at any time between 7:30 am and 6:30pm.

Their location in the heart of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard strip, which is renowned for its beautiful beaches and breath-taking scenery, was the inspiration for Cravings Delicatessen owners Michelle and Mel Uria, to introduce a fun and affordable picnic alternative for holiday makers to enjoy relaxed summer days.

“Our goal is to give both the locals and tourists more time to unwind and enjoy the holiday season by providing them with quality food without the hassle of having to stand in stores in long queues on hot days only to have to go home again to pack food for the days outing,” says Michelle. “There’s something very special about a summer picnic in Cape Town – getting to enjoy the beautiful weather and revel in nature while relishing good healthy food.”

Guests were privy to a bouquet of camera flashing entertainment, including interactive guest photography using Lomography equipment, GoPro action camera display (these can be attached to surf boards/motorbikes and anything else really that moves), an Olympus Tough Camera ice sculpture display, 40x Sandisk 8 Gig Contour flash drives hand-outs, and a showcase of the SAcamera Facebook photo competition winner’s work.

Rounding up the evening was a prize draw for two pairs of Bushnell Binoculars, which were handed over to lucky winners Danny Danijibrail and Darryn van der Walt. “Super exciting” says Danijibrail, “Thank you so much for this SAcamera!”

“We’re extremely excited about the opportunity to be one of the retailers who supply aspiring photographers, film studios and professional photographers in the city centre. I believe we will become the go to store for friendly service, the best prices and widest selection of photo, imaging and video products in the market.” says co-founder of SAcamera, Jesse Hemson-Struthers.

The Public Investment Corporation Real Estate Managers (PIC REAM) has earmarked R260 million for a total overhaul of the well-known Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton. PIC REAM is a division of PIC, a large shareholder in many of South Africa’s leading retail destinations, and manages Centre Point. The redevelopment will not only enhance this shopping centre, but should also boost investment in the surrounding areas. Construction is expected to commence in January 2012, with doors opening to consumers by October 2013.

Situated on a main thoroughfare and easily accessible via Koeberg Road, a major traffic route along the West Coast, the Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton’s CBD has always been popular with people who work or live in the surrounding areas.

Now, with plans for redevelopment nearing completion, this shopping centre is set to completely change the face of the Milnerton CBD and become a convenient and secure retail destination for communities such as Koeberg, Milnerton, Wood Bridge Island, Sunset Beach, Table View and Canal Walk. Not only will the shopping centre generate new business and create much needed employment opportunities in itself, but it should also trigger further investment in the area to keep pace with residential developments in and around this beautiful and popular seaside suburb.

Zane De Decker, asset manager for PIC, is positive about the potential of this centre. “Centre Point is a true diamond in the rough. The site is extremely well located and has been earmarked for possible development since its acquisition in 2007.”

To ensure the future success of Centre Point, PIC appointed Lazercor Developments in July 2009 to conduct an investigation into the redevelopment of this shopping centre. After extensive analysis of the condition of the current building, the decision was made to demolish the existing structure and to rebuild it from the ground up. Although this would have severe cost implications, the owners of this new landmark building considered it a worthwhile investment in the community.

Plans for redeveloping the centre include three levels of secure, covered basement parking with internal access to the mall, plus two floors of retail outlets such as Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks, a food hall, full banking lobby, clothing shops, and a range of restaurants overlooking Table Bay, with postcard views of Table Mountain. The gross lettable area (GLA) for retail outlets will total 10 000m2, ensuring enough space for an extensive and diverse range of stores that would attract shoppers of all ages and interests.

In addition, the new Centre Point Shopping Centre has been designed to accommodate an apartment block on the Western edge (to be developed at a later stage), offering 60 apartments with 360o views of Table Mountain and Table Bay. Not only will these apartments be located in close proximity to all retail outlets in the centre, but also to the Milnerton golf course and some of the best windsurfing and kite surfing beaches in the world.

De Decker explains, “This mixed-use development will improve the retail offering in the Milnerton CBD significantly, and act as a catalyst for further urban renewal along Koeberg Road. We are basically aiming to create a convenience centre that will appeal to consumers in the greater Milnerton area, and serve as a lifestyle hub where both residential and retail space can be found under one roof. “

In terms of looks, Centre Point will not disappoint. The new building has been designed in a contemporary style, with natural colours and clean architectural lines based on a nautical context; imitating the maritime setting of the coast on which it is situated.

With regard to environmental awareness, the proposed redevelopment of the centre allows for greener principles to be applied from inception through to construction and operation. Passive ventilation of service passages, south-facing glazing, naturally ventilated parking – to mention but a few features – will promote greater awareness of energy use among both consumers and tenants.

According to De Decker, potential tenants are very positive about the redevelopment of the Centre Point Shopping Centre and see the transformation as extremely promising for both their businesses and the surrounding areas. “We are confident that the new shopping center will be very popular among shoppers and retailers alike”.
The leasing agent for the Centre Point Shopping Centre is Andre Bauermeister from Newton Commercial Properties. He can be contacted on 083 756 0729.

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) is one of the leading investors in South Africa, with assets of more than R700 billion under management. The PIC has investments in many reputable properties throughout South Africa, including shareholding in prestigious developments such as the V&A Waterfront, Cavendish Square, Tyger Valley, Menlyn Park and Sandton City.

Famous Cape Town Landmarks: What’s in a name?

Alongside a brand new 2010 World Cup stadium and the development of the new IRTBus service, the City of Cape Town holds a vast history in its many famous landmarks and most popular tourist destinations. The name given to each is significant and provides insight into their origins and transformations.

Table Mountain:
Table Mountain, the iconic symbol of the city and an attraction for many international visitors as well as locals, is one of the oldest mountains on Earth. It was in 1503 that the Portuguese explorer António de Saldanha ascended the mountain and aptly named it Montanha da Mesa (Table Mountain). The earliest Cableway, launched in 1929 wasthe first and most efficient way to the mountain’s peak. The Cableway has undergone multiple upgrades, the latest of which occurred in 1997 and is the one that is inoperation today. Table Mountain offers visitors a number of hiking trails, magnificent views and the Table Mountain Cafe at its peak.

Rhodes Memorial
Rhodes memorial built in 1912 is located on the slopes of Devil’s Peak and provides a magnificent view stretching out to the Hottentots Holland Mountains. It derives its name from Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902) who became a prominent and successful figure in the South African diamond industry and formed De Beers ConsolidatedMines in 1888. The site on which his memorial is built is where Rhodes spent a significant amount of time in quiet contemplation. The Statue of Energy placed at the foot of 49 steps (one for each year of his life) represents Rhodes’ relentless determination. Its inscription was composed by the famous poet, novelist and close friend Rudyard Kipling. The popular Rhodes Memorial Restaurant was recently revamped for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The V&A Watefront
Jan Van Riebeek was the first to build a small jetty in 1654 where the large leisure centre and fully functioning harbour stand today as part of his task to establishment a refreshment station for sailors of the Dutch East India Company. In 1860,Midshipman HRH Prince Alfred, the Second Son of Queen Victoria began the construction of the breakwater for the Table Bay Harbour to protect ships from stormruin. The basin became known as the Alfred Basin and was followed by the addition of the Victoria Basin as visitors to the Cape increased due to the gold and diamond rush in South Africa. The two basins were completed in 1920. It is from these historic figures that the V&A Waterfront derived its name. The V&A Waterfront is an unforgettable shopping, dining and entertainment experience and is accompanied by exquisite views and a vibrant Cape Town energy.

Cape Point:
Cape Point, declared an international heritage site, lies 60km from Cape Town and is the richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. It is where the Indian and AtlanticOceans meet. Cape Point has a rich maritime history and the ‘Point’ of the African continent was well respected by sailors for centuries. In daylight it was a navigational landmark and in the darkness it became a burial ground for many shipwrecks from the dangerous Cape storms. The first lighthouse was built in 1859 and stood 249
metres above sea level. This was not an ideal location and so the second and current lighthouse was built in 1914 at 286 metres. It is the most powerful on the South African coast. Visitors can reach these heights with the Flying Dutchman Fanicular, the only commercial railway funicular in Africa. The Two Oceans restaurant is famous for its scrumptious seafood cuisine and has one of the best oceans views in South Africa.
