The biggest event on the Huisgenoot and Afrikaans music calendar was a celebration of note once again. The two Sun City weekends, which took place from 7 to 9 October and 14 to 16 October, made up the 12th Skouspel and a host of firsts were celebrated.

The most performers ever seen on the Skouspel stage, seven female and 38 male artists, took part in this year’s event at the Sun City Superbowl. This year Coenie de Villiers was honoured for his contribution to Afrikaans music and several artists were assisted by Coenie in performing a selection of his hits – Jennifer Jones, Snotkop and hot band Die Heuwels Fantasties among others.

The year’s Skouspel was made extra special with a range of new elements. Giant screens with thematic videos complemented the mulimillion rand stage, in step with international trends. This was also the first year that dancers formed part of the act.

A range of top fashion designers and design houses took care of the outfits such as Karen ter Morshuizen of Lunar, Stefania Morland, Suzaan Heyns, Diaan Daniels, Heni, 46664, Shaldon Kopman for Naked Ape, Errol Arendz shoes, Klûk CGDT, Hip Hop, Thula Sindi, David Tlale and Joel Janse van Vuuren. Eugenie Drakes of Piece provided the African-inspired jewellery. Designers well known for contributions to previous year’s Skouspel outfits were also there: Kobus Dippenaar, Gert-Johan Coetzee and Dazelle Venter. House of Monatic’s C2 label dressed the men in tailored suits.

Italian singer Patrizio Buanne, the first international star to grace the Skouspel stage, impressed audiences when he sang a few lines of a song in Afrikaans and Nianell launched her first book, Knowing Who I Am, at Skouspel Vrouedag, sponsored by Virseker.

Skouspel was made possible by a range of faithful sponsors: Checkers, Clover, Virseker, Sun City, M-Net, KykNet and Computicket.

And another first! For those who couldn’t make it to this year’s Skouspel, it will be on the big screen at Ster-Kinekor theatres from 11 November. Call Ster-Kinekor’s ticket line on 082-16789 or go to www.sterkinekor.com for more information. The Skouspel DVD and CD will go on sale at the end of November.

This year Skouspel will be more glamorous than ever. Not only will the best in Afrikaans performers be there, but a host of fashion designers will be showcasing their latest designs at the event. Taking place on the weekends of 7 to 9 October and 14 to 16 October, the Skouspel weekends offer the ideal getaway for the whole family – an adventurous setting, unforgettable music and entertainment for everyone from seven to seventy. This year there’s even more to look forward to, with the Shoprite Checkers championship boerewors competition, prizes and giveaways from Clover as well as additional performances by the Campbells on Friday 7 October and Friday 14 October. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to at this year’s Skouspel.

Huisgenoot-Tempo and the Skouspel programme
As a reminder of this special event we’re putting together a glossy programme that will be sold at Skouspel. In it you’ll find beautiful photographs of each of the artists taking part as well as a behind-the-scenes feature on this magical production. This keepsake will be printed on glossy paper and will be sold with Huisgenoot Tempo at R50.

Skouspel Vrouedag
This year’s Skouspel Vrouedag offers something special for the ladies. The singer Nianell talks to Huisgenoot Tempo editor Wicus Pretorius about her latest book, Om te Weet Wie Ek Is, and she and Jak de Priester will perform some of their most popular songs. Revlon will do mini makeovers and each lady will go home with a pamper pack containing a gift and a copy of the latest Huisgenoot Mooi. The event starts at 9 am and includes light snacks, tea and coffee. It’s the perfect way to spend your morning while the rest of the family sets off for some entertainment at the Valley of Waves. Tickets are available at Computicket and cost R200 each. Nianell’s book will also be on sale at a special price.

Beachy offer for day visitors
If you can’t stay the weekend it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the Sun City fun. Make use of our Beachy offer for day visitors and you can enjoy the following:
- The crowning of the Shoprite Checkers championship boerewors king, which takes place at Sun City’s Valley of Waves on Saturday 8 October. Visitors will be able to taste the finalists’ recipes.
- Clover will be hosting a range of fun activities, competitions and giveaways on Saturday 15 October at Valley of Waves.
The Beachy offer costs R160 per person and grants you access to all of these activities as well as a free hamburger or chicken burger, chips and cooldrink. You’ll also be able to visit the Huisgenoot readers’ stall where there will be t-shirts, CDs, magazines and other products on sale. Gates open at 9 am and close at 6 pm. This offer is available for any of the days of the Skouspel weekends: 8 and 9 October and 15 and 16 October. Tickets available at Computicket.

From Skouspel to Aardklop
Only the most popular and in-demand artists perform at Skouspel, and they don’t like to disappoint their fans. That’s why we’re flying some of the artists to Potchefstroom to perform at the Treffer na Treffer concert at Aardklop on 6 October (a day before Skouspel starts). Treffer na Treffer will be the only Huisgenoot show at Aardklop this year, so if you’re going to be there it’s the ticket you should get. The show starts at 6 pm at the Clover music arena on the Aardklop festival terrain and tickets are available at Computicket. Reserved seats cost R125 and unreserved seats R95.

Sponsors
Skouspel is once again supported by a host of loyal sponsors this year. Checkers, Clover, Sun City, kykNET and Computicket are being joined by Virseker, who are also sponsoring Skouspel Vrouedag, SkouspelPlus 2012 and the Huisgenoot Tempotoekennings and Huisgenoot Tempo Liedjieskryfkompetisie.

If you’d like to attend Skouspel you’ll have to hurry! The only tickets left are for the concerts on Sunday 9 and 16 October. Tickets available at Computicket and prices range from R280 to R620.

Goldfish, the live electronic duo that are taking the dance world by storm are back with their 3rd studio album entitled,Get Busy Living.

Goldfish first burst onto the international consciousness when International Club Super Brand Pacha signed them to create an album for their Perceptions of Pacha series. As no other album, Goldfish captured the carefree vibe of the magical island of Ibiza, and the numerous awards, platinum sales in their home country and a top 10 on the US iTunes Dance Charts firmly cemented their reputation as guys to watch.

Aside from their residency-to-die-for at Pacha Ibiza, The boys also quickly found themselves maintaining a grueling globetrotting tour schedule with sold-out shows from Miami to Moscow, from Sydney Opera House to Sao Paulo, and in-between still finding time to mix the coveted covermount CD for DJ mag.

With all that time on tour and brimming with ideas from their amazing experiences travelling the world, enough was enough. Goldfish locked themselves away for the 1st half of 2010 creating, jamming and recording the tracks that had been developing on the road. Combining their signature organic jazzy sampled sound with crisp production and incredible vocal collaborations – The Fishies are back – with an album that is guaranteed to make Goldfish a household name. Get Busy Living has that Goldfish sound fans know and love, but with a development and maturity that shows they have truly come of age. There is no better time than now to Get Busy Living.

Track Listing

Get busy Living – Goldfish have done it again. Blissful uplifting pianos, an absolutely huge chorus, all tied up with a slamming beat. Featuring the honeyed vocals of super-talent Emily Bruce, “This track took us completely by surprise. It morphed from a jam we had during a gig and that piano riff just opened up into a full song…All the best ideas happen to us when we aren’t trying. As soon as you try… you’re screwed!”

We come Together - Goldfish stretch out from four-to-the-floor territory with chunky Hip hop beats that will have you bopping your head in no time. ‘‘We’d always been a fan of Questlove(drummer for the Roots) and his style of drumming and we wanted to capture that organic driving rhythm…Sakhile’s vocals and machine-gun rap really took this to a place we’d never gone before.”

Call me – Hypnotizing rhythms, bitter-sweet La Roux, Sarah McLachlan-esque vocals. Once again, Goldfish write a chorus worth it’s weight in gold. Featuring the vocals of Monique Hellenberg, known for her appearance on The Goldfish hit This is how it goes. “We couldn’t imagine not doing a track without Monique! She lends such a sense of vulnerability to the song. It’s all about the push and pull of new relationships and the games people play with each other. One minute you’re in heaven, the next, your heart is smashed to smithereens”

Humbug – a track that makes you think it’s Gorilaz-meets-Chocolate rain, with a bridge play-out that will be stuck in your head for weeks. Sakhile Moleshe features once again. “This track had a real playfulness about it. Sak took about a million takes till he was happy with his delivery. Sort of laconic and in your face all at once…it’s always a pleasure working with a vocalist who cares as much as we do”

Show you how - Shout-along chorus, juxtaposed with an almost Midnight Oil flavour to the vocals. Dave got behind the mic on this one. “It’s about some good memories in Ibiza, we’ve had some special moments here over the years…”

Crunchy Joe - The answer to Fort Knox. Buzzing baselines, crunchy blues riffs, all tied into a chorus you can’t help but sing along to the next time it comes around. Featuring Dom’s prized Wurlitzer Keyboard, found in of all places a deserted School in the Karoo, or so the story goes

Brush your Hair – Goldfish get back to their roots with a jazzy, bopping tune. Scatting vocals, sizzling brush rhythms and a B-section that turns a playful track into something rather mean…”That Bass line halfway through is a Moog run through a Korg MS-20 plug-in….and if you know what that means you’re sound geeks like us” laughs Dave

In too deep – ‘We were really proud of this track. Dave and I spent an absolute fortune importing a special boutique hand-made valve pre-amp for our vocal mic and you know what? It was worth every penny when you listen to how Emily’s vocal came out. It just has that vintage warmth and clarity of Jazz vocalists like Nancy Sinatra and Stacy Kent that you just don’t get on a lot of recordings these days. Suppose you get what you pay for! Kudos to Emily for absolutely nailing her take with that great scat solo on the outro. We also really like the contrast between the Sax and Double Bass flavours in the verse against that chubby Moog Synth Bassline in the chorus. We’ll always be fond of this one!”
