HAIR came directly from Greenwich Village, a couple of blocks away from the real hippies changing the world down in Washing ton Square, and blazed every aspect of this counterculture across the stage in vivid afro, tie-dye, beaded, long-haired, psychedelic colour! “We wanted to create something new, something different, something that translated to the stage the wonderful excitement we felt in the streetsâ€, commented Rado.
And HAIR didn’t stop there – in 1970 and 1975 it challenged the American Constitution to uphold the First Amendment right of freedom of speech, and also became the iconic anti-war musical, unfortunately as relevant today as it was in the Flower Power ‘60s at the height of the Vietnam conflict.
