The popular tournament, now in its fourth consecutive year, is the brainchild of former Springbok stars Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck. Medac/Rockets, the country’s leading manufacturer and distributor of sports injury bracing and performance gear will be the official rehab partner for the event.

This year is set to be bigger and better than ever with the number of teams being increased from 56 to 72 and there will now be four divisions – a heavy and light Beer League, The Vets League and the more competitive Premier League.

As always, there will be appearances many from local and international rugby legends such as Breyton Paulse, Leon Lloyd, John Allen and Malcolm O’Kelly. The tournament will include plenty of entertainment off the field with live performances from top acts such as the UK band, The Lightyears and the popular Cape Town based Me and Mr Brown. There will also be beer and food tents, children’s play areas and lots of fun competitions and giveaways including a kicking contest that will see one lucky winner walk away with a brand-new Golf GTI worth R365 000.

As the official rehab partners, Medac/Rockets will have physiotherapists which will be on hand throughout the tournament to assist players with recovery and managing injuries including the use of a cryotherapeutic ice recovery pool and providing post-game massages at the Medac/Rockets Recovery Zone.

“The 10’s tournament is a great event to be involved in. Our recovery tent provides all the players with a world class service of which we are extremely proud,” says Craig Homan, Medac CEO.

This year Skouspel will be more glamorous than ever. Not only will the best in Afrikaans performers be there, but a host of fashion designers will be showcasing their latest designs at the event. Taking place on the weekends of 7 to 9 October and 14 to 16 October, the Skouspel weekends offer the ideal getaway for the whole family – an adventurous setting, unforgettable music and entertainment for everyone from seven to seventy. This year there’s even more to look forward to, with the Shoprite Checkers championship boerewors competition, prizes and giveaways from Clover as well as additional performances by the Campbells on Friday 7 October and Friday 14 October. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to at this year’s Skouspel.

Huisgenoot-Tempo and the Skouspel programme
As a reminder of this special event we’re putting together a glossy programme that will be sold at Skouspel. In it you’ll find beautiful photographs of each of the artists taking part as well as a behind-the-scenes feature on this magical production. This keepsake will be printed on glossy paper and will be sold with Huisgenoot Tempo at R50.

Skouspel Vrouedag
This year’s Skouspel Vrouedag offers something special for the ladies. The singer Nianell talks to Huisgenoot Tempo editor Wicus Pretorius about her latest book, Om te Weet Wie Ek Is, and she and Jak de Priester will perform some of their most popular songs. Revlon will do mini makeovers and each lady will go home with a pamper pack containing a gift and a copy of the latest Huisgenoot Mooi. The event starts at 9 am and includes light snacks, tea and coffee. It’s the perfect way to spend your morning while the rest of the family sets off for some entertainment at the Valley of Waves. Tickets are available at Computicket and cost R200 each. Nianell’s book will also be on sale at a special price.

Beachy offer for day visitors
If you can’t stay the weekend it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the Sun City fun. Make use of our Beachy offer for day visitors and you can enjoy the following:
- The crowning of the Shoprite Checkers championship boerewors king, which takes place at Sun City’s Valley of Waves on Saturday 8 October. Visitors will be able to taste the finalists’ recipes.
- Clover will be hosting a range of fun activities, competitions and giveaways on Saturday 15 October at Valley of Waves.
The Beachy offer costs R160 per person and grants you access to all of these activities as well as a free hamburger or chicken burger, chips and cooldrink. You’ll also be able to visit the Huisgenoot readers’ stall where there will be t-shirts, CDs, magazines and other products on sale. Gates open at 9 am and close at 6 pm. This offer is available for any of the days of the Skouspel weekends: 8 and 9 October and 15 and 16 October. Tickets available at Computicket.

From Skouspel to Aardklop
Only the most popular and in-demand artists perform at Skouspel, and they don’t like to disappoint their fans. That’s why we’re flying some of the artists to Potchefstroom to perform at the Treffer na Treffer concert at Aardklop on 6 October (a day before Skouspel starts). Treffer na Treffer will be the only Huisgenoot show at Aardklop this year, so if you’re going to be there it’s the ticket you should get. The show starts at 6 pm at the Clover music arena on the Aardklop festival terrain and tickets are available at Computicket. Reserved seats cost R125 and unreserved seats R95.

Sponsors
Skouspel is once again supported by a host of loyal sponsors this year. Checkers, Clover, Sun City, kykNET and Computicket are being joined by Virseker, who are also sponsoring Skouspel Vrouedag, SkouspelPlus 2012 and the Huisgenoot Tempotoekennings and Huisgenoot Tempo Liedjieskryfkompetisie.

If you’d like to attend Skouspel you’ll have to hurry! The only tickets left are for the concerts on Sunday 9 and 16 October. Tickets available at Computicket and prices range from R280 to R620.

Capetonians both old and young gathered at the Mouille Point Lighthouse on Sunday, 18 September, for the Sunflower Foundation’s first ever fun run/walk.

This initiative was aimed at raising awareness for 14 year old Reza Price from Westerford High School who is suffering with leukaemia.

“Unfortunately he is unable to find a donor and his quality of life will not improve unless a donor match is found. It is imperative that we make awareness around getting more people to join the registry of donors.” said Sunflower Foundation CEO, Tina Botha.

The fun run along the Sea Point promenade, kicked off at the Light House and carried on to Saunders Rock and back. All of the entrants sported bandanas to show solidarity for those leukaemia sufferers who have lost their hair.

Medac and Rockets sponsored sunflower branded yellow UV protective arm sleeves for the first 400 that entered. Medac and Rockets merchandise was also sold on site in a bid to raise more funds for the foundation while each of the runners made a contribution of R50 towards the cause.

“Despite the wind and rain on Sunday over 1000 entrants partook in the occasion, and together with Medac we managed to raise a considerable amount of funds for the Sunflower Foundation” said Botha.

The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation that educates and recruits potential bone marrow stem cell donors in an effort to prevent suffering and save lives from life-threatening blood disorders like leukaemia.

Below are two videos of the new Cape Town stadium. Greenpoint stadium has been demolished and rebuilt into a world class soccer stadium! We were fortunate enough to attend two events last week at the stadium. The first was a live taping of the popular rugby magazine show – Boots n All. The second event was a Super 14 warm up match between the Stormers and Boland. The Cape Town Stadium has great atmosphere and the facilities are also top notch. Press play below

This coming Saturday the 11th of April welcomes the 2009 edition of the Two Oceans Marathon.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon has earned a reputation as the world’s most beautiful marathon. The first race was held in 1970 and saw 26 runners line up to face the unknown challenge. Since then, the race has become a national institution and a firm favourite with local, upcountry, and international athletes. The event attracts close to 26 000 participants across the ultra, half marathon and the fun runs and provides them with a mixture of breathtaking scenery, a gruelling test of fitness for both the elite and recreational runner, and an unrivalled race organisation and atmosphere.

Participants consistently vote it as one of the best in South Africa and it continues to attract strong fields and an increasing number of international entrants. The event has become synonymous with the Easter Weekend in Cape Town, with the pre-race activities at the expo, family day, and fun runs on Easter Friday. En-route entertainment on the race day provides fun, excitement, and a unique experience to runners, family, friends, and spectators alike.

Old Mutual is proud to continue its association with this great event, which is the premier event in their road-running portfolio. Participants can choose from various distances – the scenic 56km ultra-marathon or popular 21km half-marathon and the 5km or 2.5km fun runs.
