Tune Raider – SA’s Top Female Psy Trance Talent

Tune Raider (Pamm Legg) is one of South Africa’s top female Psy-trance DJs. She’s been rocking the circuit for over eight years and is still growing in popularity season after season. With countless successful dance floors to her name, a documentary, radio show and a compilation album, Tune Raider has definitely earned her spot behind the decks. Right now, she boasts two very different offerings when it comes to her sets – a night-time full-on set and a midday psychedelic set. With a passion for all styles of Psy-trance music, she prefers to mix it up rather than being confined to one type and feels that versatility is key for any DJ.

It’s not only Tune Raider’s tight mixing and track selection that gets people dancing, her magnetic stage presence and charisma keep the energy high and the feet stomping.

It all started at the tender age of 17, when Pamm experienced Tsuyoshi Suzuki at the Vortex in the beginning of 2000. This event was the beginning of Psy-trance for many Capetonians – it was as if Tsuyoshi was sent to South Africa to open the doors of our perception. It took two years of solid partying for Pamm to realise that she was made for the DJ stage. How to get there was a totally different story – the trance DJ scene was male dominated, and getting in was bound to be a challenge.

Despite this, Tune Raider was born in 2002. She was determined to get her name out there and began playing at countless clubs and small outdoor Psy-trance festivals, soon becoming the one girl with her heart set on playing full-on night-time trance – word spread and she gained a reputation for her ambitious goal.

Her next notable step was joining up with underground radio station Mutha FM to host her own weekly show, ‘Twisted Sessions’. This interactive Psy-trance show saw a new guest DJ, producer and international artist coming into studio to spin their tunes each week. The aim of the show was to promote local talent and keep the spirit of the trance scene alive.

Then in 2005, Tune Raider was invited to play at the Vortex and Alien Safari ‘Prism’ for New Years. Vortex, Alien Safari, Earth Dance and Rezonance are now regular events on Pamm’sDJ resume along with Groovy Troopers and many other smaller label parties and club gigs. Soon Tune Raider became AfroGalactic Records’ newest label DJ and co-produced a track on the album Radio active rubber pants – the first track she co-produced and released. To date, Tune Raider has co-produced and released two tracks and there are sure to be many more.

In 2008, Pamm directed and produced the first documentary film about the local outdoor Psy-trance scene in South Africa, called Under the African Sky, which was very well received. It documents the arrival of a dance movement from Goa, India and how it spread and developed into what the South African Psy-trance scene is today. The film is rich with footage dating back to the first South African outdoor events, showing the progression of the scene with interviews from all the key players – it really stirs the emotions and makes you feel like you were there. The main idea behind this film was to get the message out there about SA trance. It was produced by Pamm (Tune Raider) and Colin (Wobblz) for Alien Safari /AfroGalactic Records in conjunction with Hemporium and Vortex. It’s written and directed by Pamm (Tune Raider), edited and co-written by WillArtz and the footage is by Dave Henning, WillArtz and Verena.

In 2009, Pamm joined up with Lady Lea’s DJ agency, Divas on Decks – a South African female DJ agency that promotes and protects female DJs of all music styles. The agency also has its own Divas on Decks’ parties, albums and tours – by the divas, for the divas! Through Divas on Decks, Pamm released her first compilation album Divas On Decks Volume 2, which includes a variety of great South African-produced music, and the collaboration track by Tune Raider and Slug called ‘Open your eyes’ – it will rock your socks off! The album is available at Look and Listen stores nationwide and through online music shops.

Cape Town luxury hotels booked the preferred choice

Five-star luxury hotels close in up-market urban areas are proving to be the preferred choice for international guests visiting for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with many of these establishments either fully booked or rapidly approaching capacity for the duration of the four-week soccer tournament.

The latest example of this accommodation preference is Pepper Club – the yet-to-be-opened R400 million five star luxury hotel and spa located in the heart of Cape Town – which has recorded pre-bookings for the tournament period of almost 95%.

These figures stand in stark contrast to reports from owners of local guest houses, private homes and backpacker hostels, who say the expected rush for 2010 World Cup accommodation had not materialised, with some fearing rooms will stand empty during the tournament.

However, David Solomon, Chairman of Solomon Brothers Property Holdings, the developers of the Pepper Club hotel, says that owners of these establishments should not be overly-concerned with the current status of their bookings, as they stand to benefit from the significant overflow once hotels reach their booking capacities for the tournament. “As long as rates are competitively priced, smaller players will benefit increasingly as the tournament draws nearer.”

(Left to right: Graham Smith, David Solomon, Mark Boucher – Pepper Club on the beach launch)

Solomon says that hotels located in South Africa’s urban areas close to amenities such as shopping centres, tourist attractions and nightlife are best placed to attract the majority of international visitors. “The feedback we have received from customers is that one of their main priorities is to be as near as possible to the action. It seems proximity to host cities and stadiums is a significant, and in many cases crucial requirement, among international guests.” He says that although the overall aim for the local tourism sector is to offer visitors a truly African experience, providers should not lose sight of the fact that many visitors still expect first-world amenities. “When compared with other accommodation offerings, South Africa’s luxury hotels are still best placed to offer a combination of a secure environment, proximity and direct access to top attractions, as well as top-class facilities that many well-travelled visitors have come to expect.”
