Local Entrepreneur Champions Sustainability

A South African businessman is leading the way in eco-friendly tourism and sustainability education.

Peter Hayward, CEO and founder of Hayward’s Grand Safari Events and Expeditions, is passionate about causes such as combating rhino poaching in southern Africa, sustaining African culture and lifestyle in rural settings and improving the socio-economic status of ordinary South Africans. Hayward’s safaris are held throughout the African continent and expose global business leaders, celebrities and politicians to the sustainable lifestyles of the African people, as well as the beauty of the African continent, in order to inspire a positive change of thinking towards sustainability.

Involved in rhino preservation since the early 90’s as chairman of the Breeding Endangered Species Trust, Hayward was instrumental in influencing several rhino breeding programs by creating unique awareness and fund raising campaigns. Rhino preservation forms an integral part of his safari programs with illustrious groups of opinion leaders and decision makers being taken to rhino preservation projects around southern Africa to experience rhino in their natural habitat and what it takes to protect this beast from extinction. Whilst on such expeditions to secret locations, guests are also invited to work hand in hand with officially appointed veterinary surgeons to assist in procedures such as applying tracking devices or obtaining blood for DNA testing. Hayward believes that educating business leaders as to the plight of the rhino is key to ensuring its survival, as commerce and trade are the root cause of its dwindling numbers.

Sharing a deep love for the African continent and its people, Hayward believes Africa has a vital role to play in humanity’s future. Despite being plagued by greed, war mongering and ethnic tensions (not unique to Africa), Africans show a resilience and versatility to even the most abject conditions and all the while remain positive throughout. Communities in rural Africa live completely “off the grid” and are wholly sustainable, starkly contrasting the overcrowded and unsustainable urban communities of the west. Given the respect and recognition they deserve, Hayward is of the opinion that these rural communities could provide valuable insight into sustainable living and long term survival. Hayward’s safaris invite their VIP groups to experience firsthand the compassion and tolerance that the people living in these communities possess in order to learn from them. By bringing urban opinion leaders into contact with rural communities, Hayward provides a bridge to lessen the gap and foster a greater understanding of one another’s role and importance in humanity’s future.

Hayward’s family heritage has played an important role in the foundation of Hayward’s Grand Safari Events and Expeditions with his ancestors having first set foot on Africa in the 1820’s and becoming true pioneers of African travel. Maintaining this legacy of exploration and adventure, Hayward may now claim the title of the world’s grandest mobile safari tented camp which accommodates guests throughout Africa in 5 star camps that are completely eco-friendly and sustainable.

Through his company, Hayward’s Grand Safari Events and Expeditions, Hayward has managed to successfully blend tourism with education. His safaris provide not only an authentically African experience, but also encourage thought leaders to learn from the people of Africa, taking heed of their sustainable practices and resource management. Furthermore, by experiencing the beauty of the continent and it’s animals firsthand, Hayward aims to stress the importance of animal preservation so that they may be enjoyed by generations to come.

YOU Spectacular Awards 2011

VOTE NOW: NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THIS YEAR’S YOU SPECTACULAR CELEBRATING SA’S BEST LOVED ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORT STARS

Nominations for the annual highlight on the South African celebrity calendar, the YOU Spectacular (which celebrates SA’s best loved entertainment and sport stars) were announced with singing sensation and Idols winner Elvis Blue together with bubbly TV presenter and fashion line owner Jeannie D leading the pack with three nominations each.

Celebrating its seventh year of success, the public can now vote for their favourite stars before the overall winners will be announced at a prestigious awards function taking place on 16 July at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

Linda Peterson, Editor of YOU magazine, says that it is exciting to see some new names on this year’s nominations list. “It’s hard to believe that a year ago the public didn’t even know who Elvis Blue was. Here he is in 2011 as one of the top stars, nominated in three categories. It’s going to be interesting to see whether the public will choose new stars over favourites from the last couple of years.”

Featuring on YOU Spectacular’s Sexiest Woman list are last year’s winner in this category Lee-Ann Liebenberg (who was also crowned FHM’s Sexiest Woman in The World in 2005, amongst many other similar titles), leading South African actress Kim Engelbrecht of Isidingo fame, the media queen of all Africa Bonang Matheba (YFM DJ, SABC Live TV presenter, fashion entrepreneur and social media phenomenon), SA’s very own Paris Hilton – socialite and actress Khanyi Mbau, and the always adorable Top Billing presenter Jeannie D, who has walked away with multiple YOU Spectacular awards the last couple of years. Their male counterparts joining them on the Sexiest Man nominees list are 2010 Idols winner Elvis Blue, TV presenter and 2010 winner in this category Janez Vermeiren who is hoping for a repeat win, TV presenter Sizwe Dhlomo best known for his work on MTV as a VJ, Isidingo hottie Sisa Hewana, and rugby phenomenon Morne Steyn.

Elvis Blue is also nominated in two additional categories, including Favourite Music Star and Favourite Newcomer. Prime Circle, the Parlotones (2010 winner), Lira and Liquideep also join him in the former category, while singing duo Crazy White Boy, Top Billing’s Simba Mhere, 7de Laan’s Hildegardt Whites and Isidingo actor Ashish Gangapersad feature on the latter list.

Morning Live co-anchor Leanne Manas is back again this year to defend her 2010 win in the Favourite TV Presenter category. She faces some stiff competition from Survivor SA’s Nico Panagio, as well as from Proverb who won over the hearts of adoring fans with his highly successful presenting gig on Idols. The always popular Top Billing presenter Jeannie D and the multi-talented Pabi Moloi of All Access are also nominated.

Nominated in an impressive third category, the unstoppable Jeannie D might also walk away with the Most Popular Female Celeb award, unless Khanyi Mbau (who even had her very own reality TV show recently) or 5fm’s larger than life personality Andele Mdoda walks away with top honours. However, the award can just as easily go to Isidingo’s Michelle Botes who portrays the ever popular villainous Cherel de Villiers-Haines or Generation’s Sophie Ndaba best known for her role as Queen Moroka on the leading South African Soapie.

Radio personalities seem to reign supreme in the Most Popular Male Celeb category, with Darren “Whackhead” Simpson (94.7 Highveld Stereo), DJ Fresh (5FM) and Gareth Cliff (5FM) all finding themselves on the sought after list. They are joined by award-winning Generations actor Menzi Ngubane and Isidingo star Arno Marais.

Simpson, DJ Fresh and Cliff are also all nominated for Favourite Radio Personality, joined by Redi Direko (Radio 702) and Unathi Nkayi & Glen Lewis (Metro FM).

It seems it will be a Generations vs. Isidingo match off this year in the Favourite Actress and Favourite Actor categories, as Sophie Ndaba and Sonia Sedibe from Generations are joined by their co-stars Zolisa Xaluva and Menzi Ngubane to prove their popularity against Isidingo’s Michelle Botes, Kim Engelbrecht and Robert Whitehead in their respective categories. However, the ladies should not underestimate 7de Laan actress Vinette Ibrahim’s public following, while the gentlemen could easily lose out to Jacques Blignaut (7de Laan) or Sello-Maake Ka Ndube (Scandal). The overall Favourite Soapie contenders this year are 7de Laan (last year’s winner), Isidingo, Generations, Scandal, Rhythm City, Binnelanders Sub Judice and newcomer The Wild.

Making it onto the Favourite Couple nominees list are Connie and Shona Ferguson, Lee-Ann Liebenberg and Nicky van der Walt, Nico and Christi Panagio, Sonia and Leslie Sedibe, and Dianne Lawrenson and Jody Abrahams.

Hoping to walk away with the prestigious title as Favourite Sport Star are professional golfer Charl Schwartzel, cricketers Imran Tahir and Hashim Amla, footballer Siphiwe Tshabalala and rugby player Pat Lambie.

“We’re looking forward to rewarding the best loved celebrities on the 16th of July at Emperors Palace, but rely on the public to determine exactly who is the most deserving,” Peterson concluded.

The public can vote until 12 July 2011 via SMS, Facebook (youmagazinesa), online (www.you.co.za), via MXit or on YOU’s mobisite (m.you.co.za). For more information, get the latest issue of YOU, on sale now, or visit www.you.co.za.

R260 million for redevelopment of Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton

The Public Investment Corporation Real Estate Managers (PIC REAM) has earmarked R260 million for a total overhaul of the well-known Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton. PIC REAM is a division of PIC, a large shareholder in many of South Africa’s leading retail destinations, and manages Centre Point. The redevelopment will not only enhance this shopping centre, but should also boost investment in the surrounding areas. Construction is expected to commence in January 2012, with doors opening to consumers by October 2013.

Situated on a main thoroughfare and easily accessible via Koeberg Road, a major traffic route along the West Coast, the Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton’s CBD has always been popular with people who work or live in the surrounding areas.

Now, with plans for redevelopment nearing completion, this shopping centre is set to completely change the face of the Milnerton CBD and become a convenient and secure retail destination for communities such as Koeberg, Milnerton, Wood Bridge Island, Sunset Beach, Table View and Canal Walk. Not only will the shopping centre generate new business and create much needed employment opportunities in itself, but it should also trigger further investment in the area to keep pace with residential developments in and around this beautiful and popular seaside suburb.

Zane De Decker, asset manager for PIC, is positive about the potential of this centre. “Centre Point is a true diamond in the rough. The site is extremely well located and has been earmarked for possible development since its acquisition in 2007.”

To ensure the future success of Centre Point, PIC appointed Lazercor Developments in July 2009 to conduct an investigation into the redevelopment of this shopping centre. After extensive analysis of the condition of the current building, the decision was made to demolish the existing structure and to rebuild it from the ground up. Although this would have severe cost implications, the owners of this new landmark building considered it a worthwhile investment in the community.

Plans for redeveloping the centre include three levels of secure, covered basement parking with internal access to the mall, plus two floors of retail outlets such as Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks, a food hall, full banking lobby, clothing shops, and a range of restaurants overlooking Table Bay, with postcard views of Table Mountain. The gross lettable area (GLA) for retail outlets will total 10 000m2, ensuring enough space for an extensive and diverse range of stores that would attract shoppers of all ages and interests.

In addition, the new Centre Point Shopping Centre has been designed to accommodate an apartment block on the Western edge (to be developed at a later stage), offering 60 apartments with 360o views of Table Mountain and Table Bay. Not only will these apartments be located in close proximity to all retail outlets in the centre, but also to the Milnerton golf course and some of the best windsurfing and kite surfing beaches in the world.

De Decker explains, “This mixed-use development will improve the retail offering in the Milnerton CBD significantly, and act as a catalyst for further urban renewal along Koeberg Road. We are basically aiming to create a convenience centre that will appeal to consumers in the greater Milnerton area, and serve as a lifestyle hub where both residential and retail space can be found under one roof. “

In terms of looks, Centre Point will not disappoint. The new building has been designed in a contemporary style, with natural colours and clean architectural lines based on a nautical context; imitating the maritime setting of the coast on which it is situated.

With regard to environmental awareness, the proposed redevelopment of the centre allows for greener principles to be applied from inception through to construction and operation. Passive ventilation of service passages, south-facing glazing, naturally ventilated parking – to mention but a few features – will promote greater awareness of energy use among both consumers and tenants.

According to De Decker, potential tenants are very positive about the redevelopment of the Centre Point Shopping Centre and see the transformation as extremely promising for both their businesses and the surrounding areas. “We are confident that the new shopping center will be very popular among shoppers and retailers alike”.
The leasing agent for the Centre Point Shopping Centre is Andre Bauermeister from Newton Commercial Properties. He can be contacted on 083 756 0729.

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) is one of the leading investors in South Africa, with assets of more than R700 billion under management. The PIC has investments in many reputable properties throughout South Africa, including shareholding in prestigious developments such as the V&A Waterfront, Cavendish Square, Tyger Valley, Menlyn Park and Sandton City.

Landmarks in Cape Town

Famous Cape Town Landmarks: What’s in a name?

Alongside a brand new 2010 World Cup stadium and the development of the new IRTBus service, the City of Cape Town holds a vast history in its many famous landmarks and most popular tourist destinations. The name given to each is significant and provides insight into their origins and transformations.

Table Mountain:
Table Mountain, the iconic symbol of the city and an attraction for many international visitors as well as locals, is one of the oldest mountains on Earth. It was in 1503 that the Portuguese explorer António de Saldanha ascended the mountain and aptly named it Montanha da Mesa (Table Mountain). The earliest Cableway, launched in 1929 wasthe first and most efficient way to the mountain’s peak. The Cableway has undergone multiple upgrades, the latest of which occurred in 1997 and is the one that is inoperation today. Table Mountain offers visitors a number of hiking trails, magnificent views and the Table Mountain Cafe at its peak.

Rhodes Memorial
Rhodes memorial built in 1912 is located on the slopes of Devil’s Peak and provides a magnificent view stretching out to the Hottentots Holland Mountains. It derives its name from Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902) who became a prominent and successful figure in the South African diamond industry and formed De Beers ConsolidatedMines in 1888. The site on which his memorial is built is where Rhodes spent a significant amount of time in quiet contemplation. The Statue of Energy placed at the foot of 49 steps (one for each year of his life) represents Rhodes’ relentless determination. Its inscription was composed by the famous poet, novelist and close friend Rudyard Kipling. The popular Rhodes Memorial Restaurant was recently revamped for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The V&A Watefront
Jan Van Riebeek was the first to build a small jetty in 1654 where the large leisure centre and fully functioning harbour stand today as part of his task to establishment a refreshment station for sailors of the Dutch East India Company. In 1860,Midshipman HRH Prince Alfred, the Second Son of Queen Victoria began the construction of the breakwater for the Table Bay Harbour to protect ships from stormruin. The basin became known as the Alfred Basin and was followed by the addition of the Victoria Basin as visitors to the Cape increased due to the gold and diamond rush in South Africa. The two basins were completed in 1920. It is from these historic figures that the V&A Waterfront derived its name. The V&A Waterfront is an unforgettable shopping, dining and entertainment experience and is accompanied by exquisite views and a vibrant Cape Town energy.

Cape Point:
Cape Point, declared an international heritage site, lies 60km from Cape Town and is the richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. It is where the Indian and AtlanticOceans meet. Cape Point has a rich maritime history and the ‘Point’ of the African continent was well respected by sailors for centuries. In daylight it was a navigational landmark and in the darkness it became a burial ground for many shipwrecks from the dangerous Cape storms. The first lighthouse was built in 1859 and stood 249
metres above sea level. This was not an ideal location and so the second and current lighthouse was built in 1914 at 286 metres. It is the most powerful on the South African coast. Visitors can reach these heights with the Flying Dutchman Fanicular, the only commercial railway funicular in Africa. The Two Oceans restaurant is famous for its scrumptious seafood cuisine and has one of the best oceans views in South Africa.
